According to author Marc McCutcheon, in his book, 'daily life in the 1800's, most medical students learn doctoring "trade" through the student system. This would mean that young people from fifteen years of age or older to move and live with established doctors and trade work for obrazovanje.Raspored lasted around two to six years with some students, then continues on a formal medical school for a period of least two to four years of education, to obtain stupnja.Većina doctor at the beginning of the century, however, opened their practice without getting a degree. Another author, Michael Varhola, in his book, "Everyday life during the Civil War," makes the following interesting statement:
• The medical schools were common during the Civil War, but unfortunately, many of them provided little training.
• To the 19th century, training for surgeons usually consisted of three, thirteen weeks semester of medical school. Some good medical schools exist mainly in established colleges and universities as Yale and Princeton. Programs in these schools lasted one or two years, and consisted almost entirely of classroom instruction, with only a few weeks of medical stay. Training each year was identical. Some students do not bother to learn the second year, although it is recommended. There is no mention of medical equipment.
Then there's Candy Moulton book "Everyday Life in the Wild West - 1840 - 1900" which states that some doctors trained in the West, but much of the area relied on the knowledge and commonsense about individuals who had formal training. They had learned by watching and doing. In the West, was a doctor doctor, if he said so, whether or not he had the training. California is the law of medical practice in 1866, and Texas was the first state to establish a board of medical examiners in 1873. Western medical schools included Medical Institute, University of the Pacific was established in 1859, who became Cooper School and at the end, Stanford Medical School.
Doctors used to register with local county officials before making a practice, but these regulations were not uniformly implemented until late in the period. What happens in those days was that the doctor will settle in the area, open office - sometimes at a pharmacy or drug store - and hang a sign or put an ad in the local newspaper. Doctors used to wear leather backpacks, or give medical supplies in the saddlebags. After the Civil War their medical kits are often military surplus instruments in the velvet-lined cases.
Medical equipment during the Civil War was outdated, and usually consisted of a chain that are cooked. According to the video on You Tube, there was no morphine and chloroform, and whiskey is sometimes used to clean wounds, or the patient will get a shot of whiskey when the amputated leg. I do not know how exactly it, but I'm sure I'm watching old westerns had a lot to do with it.
